Week 4. The Royal Family

Task 1

Read and translate the text (James Driscoll “Britain for Learners of English”, p. 80-84)
Answer the following questions:

  • Why does the British Prime Minister continue to "advise" the Queen when everybody knows he or she is really just telling her what to do?
  • The attitude of the British people towards the Royal family has changed over the last thirty years or so. Why do you think this has happened?
  • Would you advise the British people to get rid of their monarchy?

Task 3

Watch the video and answer the following questions:

What are the main duties of the Royal Family?
Why don’t a lot of people like the Royal Family?
What do the Republicans think of the Royal Family?



Task 4


There are 2 cards in different class corners.
                              One says:
"I would love to be a member of a Royal Family" (Group 1)
The other one says:
 "I would hate to be a member of a Royal Family" (Group 2)
Choose which one is most suitable for you and join either Group 1 or Group 2.
Then make up a line of argumentation within your group to present your choice. Share it with another group.
